The ADAPT Theatre Group has done it again—this time with a musical adaptation of The Addams Family! After many long months of ideation, auditions, and rehearsals, the team that brought you Hamlet put on a quirky, laugh-filled musical stacked with talent. The actors combined singing, dancing, and acting to create an award-worthy production.
Much of the talent involved in The Addams Family has been seen onstage before, from past ADAPT’s Got Talent winners to the artists who create the gorgeous backdrops and costumes for ADAPT productions. As the crew worked to bring the show’s spooky set to life, each cast member worked for weeks to perfect their singing and memorize their lines.
The musical’s story follows the famously eccentric Addams family, who live in their isolated mansion in Central Park. The Addams are living their odd but happy lives until their daughter, Wednesday Addams, reveals she has been dating a “normal” boy. When she invites the boy and his parents to the Addams’ home, a host of conflicts ensue. The audience must watch closely to see if the Addams can change their strange dynamic to include new family members, or if their disagreements will tear their close-knit clan apart.
As with all ADAPT Theatre Group productions, the musical was fully accessible to the audience, cast, and crew. Each role was tailored toward the cast’s strengths and abilities, and participants who preferred behind-the-scenes tasks were assigned to crew roles. In addition, captions were projected on a screen and two ASL interpreters provided live translations.
The third and final show closed on May 16th to rounds of thunderous applause and a standing ovation. Each cast member took turns bowing to the audience, then joined their families and friends in the audience to celebrate over an Addams Family cake.
